Creating a Quiz
Creating a quiz
Canvas allows teachers to create an online quiz that students can take from anywhere in the world (with an internet connection). Teachers can pose a variety of questions, provide instant feedback to your students, and present the quiz through a variety of options.
Using a Canvas quiz:
- Teachers can have the exam automatically graded (not including essay questions).
- Teachers can set a time limit and number of attempts
- Teachers can design a quiz to be graded, practice or non graded (survey).
Creating a Quiz from the modules page
There are multiple locations to create an assignment. For the purpose of this training course, we will be building them from the Modules page.
1. Click on the Modules link on the left side of your screen.
2. Click on Add item to module (1).
3.Select Quiz from the drop down menu.
4.If you have already created quizzes, they will be listed here. You can also select New Quiz to create a new one. You can give the quiz a name. For the Group you may leave it under Assignments for the time being. We will be covering Assignment groups next. Once you are ready, click Add Item.
5. Your new quiz will appear at the bottom of the Module. Now, lets setup some questions for the quiz. Click on the link to your quiz.
6. Once you click on the link to your quiz, click on Edit this Quiz which is located on the right side of your screen.
7. At the top of the quiz you can provide instructions for your students.
8. Below the instructions is a button to add a new question. You can also begin building groups of questions which would allow you to create quizzes from a pool. Since this is a basic course, we will create a new question from scratch.
9. Once you add a new question, you can choose the question type, pose the question and select which answer(s) are correct. You can also provide instant feedback for your students when they answer a question.
10. On the right side of your screen you will see a list of Quiz options:
- Shuffle Answers - For multiple answer questions, this option will shuffle the correct answer for each student.
- Time limit - Limit the amount of time students have to complete the quiz
- Let the Students See their Quiz Responses/Show Which Answers Were Correct - Allows students to see instant feedback about their performance.
- Allow Multiple Attempts - Lets students retake a quiz.
- Show one question at a time - By default Canvas displays quiz questions all at once. You can restrict it to only show one question at a time.
- Restrict the Quiz - Allows you to limit the time frame that students will be able to see and take the quiz.
11. Once you have completed creating questions and options for your quiz, you may save your settings which will save your progress, but will not make the quiz available for your students (1). You can also preview the quiz to view it from a student perspective (2), and lastly you can publish the quiz making it available for your students (3).
Now that we have learned about creating and publishing a quiz, click the Next button below to learn about grouping assignments together.
